Arcan.err

This game was made for the Game Development track in the course 'Explorative Software Development' at the Rotterdam University of Applied Science. It was made over the course of 20 weeks, in monogame. For most in our team of five students, it was the first game we've ever made. If you like it, or have any tips, leave a comment!

Note about AI usage: Only the games's logo and intro video are made with generative AI. The game's sprites are from a sprite-pack, which we paid for. The SFX and music are made by a musically talented team member. The trailer was made by another team member. Anything we could do ourselves, we did.

The game

Arcan.err is a fast-paced, roguelite action RPG where you play as a wizard fighting your way to the absolute top of a retro game's high-score ladder. But there’s a catch: the arcade machine you're playing on can’t handle your raw magical power.  

As you customize your wands with spell modifiers and grow stronger, the game world physically destabilizes, breaks, and glitches out around you. Can you defeat the dungeon bosses before the game collapses entirely?  

Core Features

Modular Spell Crafting

Modify your core magical abilities on the fly. Turn a standard, reliable projectile into a chain lightning, or combine lifesteal with explosives to clear entire rooms at once.  

The Glitch System

Power comes at a price. Using more spell modifiers drains the game’s core stability. If it drops too low, the game engine becomes volatile and erratic: floor tiles will vanish beneath your feet, and enemies will start moving in fast, unpredictable and glitchy patterns.

Immerse yourself in a retro pixel-art aesthetic where old-school high fantasy adventure collides with digital corruption. Watch the world glitch around you, accompanied by a custom-made soundtrack.
